Import value of tobacco products in Germany 2010-2023, by product group

In 2023, Germany imported around 2.93 million euros worth of cigarettes. This was a noticeable increase compared to the year before, with cigarettes also being among the more expensive products in this ranking. 

Daily smokers

Smoking habits are undergoing long-term changes in Germany, both for financial and health-related reasons. In terms of saving money, statistics speak for themselves. The average price for one cigarette in Germany has only gone up in recent years, reaching around 35 euro cents in 2023. This development might be one of the reasons for annually falling daily smoking levels in Germany. If in 1991 the smoking population collectively consumed 401 cigarettes a day, in 2022 that number was 175 cigarettes.

A determined industry

While imports may be decreasing, the tobacco industry is not one to go up in smoke easily. The manufacturing of tobacco products in Germany is predicted to generate around 29.5 billion U.S. dollars in industry revenue in 2024, though figures are thus far not expected to grow significantly in the following year.
